I am currently in the last semester of my WHNP program. I always refer to the MEC chart on my laptop at clinical but did not know they had an app! Thank you for this post! I know this app will be so useful during the remainder of my OB clinicals! I am sure my preceptor will love it too.

Thank you, Pink Portal, for reading our blog. I could not agree with you more. LARC methods are the most effective and confer a very small risk when used in the safe, appropriate candidate/woman after counseling.

Good point! It is so true that birth control is much safer than pregnancy. So many myths going around that inflate the risks associated with contraceptives especially the IUD.

From my young non-medical perspective, we hear so many horror stories in the media about infections and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which is quite off-putting when considering the contraceptives like the IUD and implant which are much more effective than the pill at preventing unplanned pregnancy.

When people know how low their chances are of contraception going wrong (very low and doesn’t often impact fertility) , surely more women would uptake contraception, especially long acting contraception like Intra Uterine devices (IUDs).

The creation of this blog post was to highlight (and to disseminate to our membership) the launch of the CDC’s new 2016 MEC and SPR. Both of these resources focus on the provision of hormonal contraceptives (as well as the ParaGard), their safety and use as well as instructions for use in special circumstances. They are both invaluable resources for clinicians who prescribe hormonal contraceptives. While NFP is an important option for the appropriate woman, and while it is important for clinicians to be well versed in that method so that education can be correctly provided, NFP counseling or management is not part of the MEC or SPR. I hope that women in general feel empowered to choose the method best (and safest) for them and that they do not feel they are at the “mercy” of other contraceptive methods. As a women’s health nurse practitioner, I feel the best method is the one that works the best for each individual woman, while providing her with reliable, safe contraception. Thank you for reading the blog and being part of this very important discussion. Please don’t hesitate to contact me to discuss further.

They have absolutely NO side effects, drug interactions or risks. Some methods, such as Sympto Thermo Method, Crieghton, and Marquette have 99% effectiveness for post-poning a pregnancy if followed appropriately. Seems as if you missed the best methods that would be most suitable for at risk patients.

I wish physicians and nurses trusted women enough to show them that there are methods that are natural and free from side effects like blood clots, stroke, weight gain, etc.. Women are smart enough to use NFP, but the majority of clinicians assume that women cannot possibly learn it. It is safe and effective even with my irregular cycles. I love being empowered by the knowledge of my body’s fertile and infertile patterns rather than being at the mercy of devices and chemicals.
