Thank you for this information. While am about to deliver my fourth baby, this is the first time I have had the option to use nitrous oxide in labor and am undecided about using it. But I am glad to have some of my worries cleared up.

Number five seems like a bait and switch. “Nitrous oxide will harm the baby” then “studies have not shown adverse effects on babies of mothers who have used nitrous oxide in labor.”
So which is it?

Do you have any more information on N2O and fetal monitoring not needing to change unless obstetrical status changes? This does not seem to be a given in the hospitals using it in my area. It seems to mean automatic CEFM.

In the UK it is a given that “gas and air”, as we call it, is available to all women in labour and has been for a very long time. I now live and work in the US and was very surprised to find that it is seen as a “new” thing and not available in my area. It is very disappointing that the US is so far behind.

as a mother, a global citizen, and an FP who does OB I am concerned about studies showing damage to fetal brain cells with use, the lack of objective pain relief on studies with this, and the fact this is a green house gas!
