I have been a victim of verbal/emotional abuse from my spouse (who is now my ex-spouse) for years. I still have to listen to the negative and hurtful comments since we share custody, but it is not to the extent that is was when we were together. Now that I have been out of the relationship for 10 years, and have other support not connected to him (work and friends), I can distance myself from the verbal abuse mentally. However, when you are in the relationship, it is hard to see yourself as a person worth loving. It took several years to undo the emotional damage which was inflicted on me over the many years of marriage.
